"Producer and multi-instrumentalist Eli Kahn used his stay-at-home order with purpose and composed a dynamic and immersive instrumental album that is out now. "How Are You? No, Really...How Are You?" is a cross-genre potpourri of Kahn's virtuosic capabilities. From lounge bar acoustics to math rock intricacies to jazz stylings to soulful bounce, this sounds like the score to a movie that doesn't exist. A soundtrack to a short film where men have flowers for faces, and every guitar solo sprouts a bouquet that oozes a pool of petals. It makes sense that the final song on the ten track album is called "Cosmic Garden".
A South Bend, Indiana resident, Kahn has been producing music, performing music, and collaborating for years. Part of the hip-hop trio The B.E.A.T. as well as a member of instrumental jazz duo After Ours, Kahn has played festivals, dive bars, cafes, museums, sweaty basements, and more. His new solo album is an amalgamation of his history with music and his continued tastes. A melting pot of ambient lullabies, bedroom soul, and laid-back jazz. An album that is 100% him. The skill and the follow-through is right here on display. Center stage. The moon listens in as the six string catches fire."

"Whether it be the dreamy ambiance or the hazy production, the latest instrumental album from South Bend’s Eli Kahn is a master class in building soundscapes that feel emotionally lush. Kahn effortlessly leverages the album’s lo-fo influences to weave in nostalgia, comfort and lucidity, while often using that platform to flex his muscles as an instrumentalist. Each track feels like you’re jumping between little cinematic worlds — self-contained but vibrant. From start to finish, the inspired track list is beyond inviting and rewards multiple listens with its musical intentionality.
The album’s opening track, “Acceptance,” is goosebump-inducing. While it’s in no rush, the glossy chords develop into polished guitar riffs with snappy lo-fi percussion that rounds out the track without dipping into the limelight. There isn’t a sound that feels wasted or lost, and Kahn leverages repetition to deliver some soulful guitar solos. Kahn – best known as a member of the After Ours progressive jazz duo – also collaborates with Kalamazoo’s Jordan Hamilton to deliver a symbiotic performance on “(In My Dreams We) Levitate.” together, The duo ebbs and flows, with Hamilton bouncing off of and inspired foundation to add to a swirling string section. Balancing complexity with harmony, the track is inviting, sophisticated and peaceful — often all at once."

It's a glorious swirl of Fleet Foxes, and Smile era Beach Boys.
